Blog 12 - Mental Health
Unless you know someone or have a family member with a mental illness, the only way anyone will be able to understand this illness would be to educate yourself and others around you. This is the only way I can think of for people to truly understand mental illness and to break the stigma and shame around the illness. People that have mental illnesses did not ask for it and they should not be treated differently because they are sick.

I don't think you have to know someone who has a mental illness to be able to exhibit compassion and not pass judgement. I agree being aware and educated will make this substantially easier but as we all know our society is full of many ignorant people who even if they DID know someone with a mental illness, they still would not accept them. I think that education in high school (becuse most people complete hs) would be very valuable to our society. Maybe spending less time on stupid testing like TAKS and more on realistic, real world education like health, financial responsibility and physical fitness would be beneficial!
